Blue Mountains Elk Initiative Celebrates 35 Years With New Website

For 35 years, the Blue Mountains Elk Initiative (BMEI) has brought together conservation organizations, government agencies, Tribal Nations, private landowners, and other partners to improve elk habitat and wildlife management across northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington. The initiative has now launched a new website to celebrate its accomplishments and share its ongoing conservation efforts. Since its beginnings in 1990, the BMEI has leveraged over $21 million dollars and completed more than 500,000 acres of habitat improvement across the Blue Mountains.

"The Initiative is celebrating 35 years, and we want to showcase the great work that has been accomplished to improve elk distribution and wildlife habitat across the BMEI landscape," said Monty Gregg, forest biologist on the Ochoco National Forest and BMEI coordinator since 2022.

The new website, BlueMountainsElkInitiative.org, offers visitors a comprehensive look at the initiative's history, mission, and accomplishments. Visitors can learn about participating partners, meet members of the Operations Committee, explore past and current habitat improvement projects, and find information about grant opportunities.

The website will also serve as a resource for the latest BMEI news and updates, with additional partner involvement expected in the years ahead. As BMEI celebrates this milestone, its commitment to collaboration and healthy wildlife habitats remains as strong as ever.
